Frequenty Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Inspection Butler?

Inspection Butler is a building permit and inspection-tracking tool.

What sorts of data will Inspection Butler place into the database?

Inspection Butler keeps track of permits, inspection logs, complaints, violations, and so on. Inspection Butler also creates a wide variety of pre-formatted reports from the data.

Does Inspection Butler archive building plans?

Yes. As part of the Permit tracking portion of Inspection butler, a building plan – either hand drawn, or computer generated – can be linked to each permit so long as the plan has been saved as a file on the same computer (or network) as Inspection Butler. As a matter of fact, any file types can be linked to a permit record, including letters of correspondence, digital pictures, and email messages – anything that can be saved as a stand-alone computer file.

Will Inspection Butler handle complaints and violations?

Yes, Inspection Butler will record and track complaints and violations.  In fact, Inspection Butler also provides a pre-formatted Order to Remedy letter that one can send directly to the violator as notification of a violation.

How about fire inspections?

Inspection Butler does have a basic Fire Inspection tracking tool.  This is not the primary focus of Inspection Butler, however.

What kinds of reports does Inspection Butler generate?

There are a wide variety of pre-formatted reports generated by inspection Butler. One of the most useful reports is the dated summary report, which itemizes each permit issued within a user-selectable date range. The Inspection Butler user can also ask for a list of the permits that are close, or beyond, expiration. This, too, is a very useful report, especially for inspection planning purposes. For a complete list of the reports generated, please visit the Inspection Butler website at http://www.taugas.com.

How much does Inspection Butler cost?

An Inspection Butler v3.0x single license is priced at $995, plus tax, if applicable. We require a single license for each municipality supported, as well as for each computer (or user) within each municipality. For example, if a single town has two computers that will access Inspection Butler, then two licenses are required. Likewise, if a single Code Enforcement Officer services two municipalities, then two Inspection Butler licenses are required to support both municipalities.

Do I have to pay a yearly subscription or maintenance fees?

No. With Inspection Butler, there are no yearly subscription fees, or maintenance fees, or hidden fees whatsoever. As with the Inspection Butler design, we kept our pricing simple and straightforward.

What about upgrades, how are they handled?

Optional software upgrades, as with other commercial software upgrades, will be offered from time to time at a discount price for current customers.

So, purchase of Inspection Butler doesn’t include technical assistance, does it?

Yes, it does. We stand behind Inspection Butler and will support each and every copy we sell. Simply report any problem that might arise, and we will work with you to investigate the cause of the problem and to correct it.

What are the system requirements for Inspection Butler?

All that is needed is a Windows operating system (Win98, Win2000, WinME, or WinXP), Microsoft Access2000 (or newer), and around 50 megabytes of free hard drive space. Keep in mind that the more data archived by Inspection Butler, the more hard drive space that will be needed. This is particularly important if pictures or building plans are to be included with permit records.

Do I have to be a computer genius to use Inspection Butler?

No, definitely not. We designed Inspection Butler to be easy and straightforward to use. A simple series of buttons lead the user to each of the data entry forms or reports. From there using Inspection Butler is as easy as typing information into a form or printing individual letters. If you can use email or “surf the web,” you can probably use Inspection Butler with no trouble at all.

Can Inspection Butler be used by more than one person on more than one computer?

Yes. Multiple licenses will be needed, though: one for each simultaneous user. Also, installation must be customized for your particular computer system set-up, but our technical staff will walk you through this in a simple phone conversation.

I support more than one municipality. Can I still use Inspection Butler?

Yes. Each municipality will be required to purchase a separate copy of Inspection Butler.

Can I “try before I buy?”

Absolutely. A demonstration version of Inspection Butler is available at http://www.taugas.com. This demonstration is fully functional for 5 calendar days – all data entry and report creation tools operate just as in the fully licensed version. NOTE: after the 5-day trial period, all data will be rendered completely inaccessible.
